The Source featuring Candi Staton

British production/songwriting trio with American singer Candi Staton (b. 13 March 1940) · Streetwave, 1986

“The Source” began as an alias for the British songwriting team of Anthony B. Stephens, Arnecia Michelle Harris and John Bellamy, per Wikipedia’s entry on the group ↗. The voice on the record is Candi Staton, the Alabama-born soul and gospel singer already known in America for her 1970 reading of “Stand by Your Man” and her 1976 disco hit “Young Hearts Run Free.” The strangest part of the story is that she did not know she had made it: the vocal had been cut earlier for a direct-to-video documentary, and Staton has said she could not remember recording a song by that title at all. Wikipedia quotes her on being told she had a hit in England and asking which song it was.
