The Zutons were a Liverpool rock band who both wrote ‘Valerie’ and recorded it first, releasing it as a single in 2006 from their album Tired of Hanging Around. The song is credited to all five members, with frontman Dave McCabe as its principal writer. Their original reached No. 9 in the UK — a genuine hit — yet within a year it was almost entirely overshadowed by a cover, and their authorship is the part of the story most listeners never learn.
