Them

Belfast R&B group, formed 1964 · fronted by Van Morrison

Them formed in Belfast in April 1964 after Van Morrison answered an advertisement for a new R&B club at the Maritime Hotel. Their October 1964 recording — with Billy Harrison on lead guitar and session players including Jimmy Page on rhythm guitar, Andy White on drums and Phil Coulter on second keyboard — reached No. 10 in the UK. It is a genuinely great record, and the only error in the popular account of it is chronological: they were covering a Bluebird 78 that was already decades old.
