Thomas Nast

1840–1902 · German-born American editorial cartoonist

Thomas Nast is often called the “Father of the American Cartoon”. His Harper’s Weekly cartoons attacked the Tammany Hall machine of William Marcy “Boss” Tweed. Quote Investigator credits Nast with the 1871 caption “As long as I count the Votes, what are you going to do about it? say?”, the earliest known version of the vote-counting saying. QI thinks Tweed probably never said it himself.
