By 1986 Turner was deep into the comeback that Private Dancer had launched, and Break Every Rule ↗ was the follow‑up built to keep it going. “Don’t Turn Around” came out of those sessions, produced by Bob Clearmountain and Bryan Adams, and was placed on the back of “Typical Male” — a single that went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 while its flip side went essentially unnoticed. Turner recorded it first and then, in commercial terms, gave it away.
