Turner’s version, released in August 1989 as the lead single from Foreign Affair on Capitol Records, is the one the world knows. Before recording it she went to co-writer Holly Knight and asked for two changes: a bridge, which she felt the song was missing, and a key change. Produced by Dan Hartman with Turner and featuring Edgar Winter on saxophone, it reached no. 5 in the UK and no. 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, went double platinum in Britain, and became so bound up with her name that the two are effectively interchangeable. The only error in the popular memory is chronological — her record really is the definitive one.
