UB40

English reggae/pop band · formed 1978

UB40 released their reggae cover of ‘Red Red Wine’ in 1983 on Labour of Love, and it became so definitive that it eclipsed the 1967 original completely. The band knew the song only through Tony Tribe’s reggae version, not Diamond’s — guitarist Astro told the Financial Times that when they saw the writing credit ‘N Diamond’, they assumed it was a Jamaican artist called Negus Diamond. Their version is genuinely theirs; the only error is thinking the song began with them.
