b. 4 March 1952, Turin · Italian singer-songwriter
Umberto Tozzi is a Turin-born singer-songwriter who has sold more than 70 million records internationally, almost all of them outside the English-speaking market. He wrote “Gloria” with Giancarlo Bigazzi and recorded it in Italian in 1979, cutting the parent album at Union-Studios in Munich with a largely American band. He had already written “Ti amo”, which sat at number one in Italy for seven months in 1977, and “Tu” in 1978; he won the Sanremo Festival in 1987 and placed third at Eurovision the same year. In the United States he is mostly known, if at all, as the answer to a trivia question about somebody else’s hit.
