The music is Donaggio’s, written with the veteran Italian lyricist Vito Pallavicini, whose words gave the song its original title. The English lyric — a fresh text rather than a translation — was supplied by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell, who by their own account knocked it out in the course of a single evening out. That English lyric is why the song has two quite different names and why the Italian original is so easy to miss.
