Warren Bennis (1925–2014) was an American organizational theorist described by Wikipedia as a pioneer of the contemporary field of leadership studies — a subject that barely existed when he began writing about it. He was provost at SUNY-Buffalo and president of the University of Cincinnati before becoming University Professor and Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California, where he was founding chairman of its Leadership Institute. His 1985 book with Burt Nanus, Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge, drew the managers-versus-leaders distinction that Covey later compressed into the sentence the internet now misfiles.
