Wilhelm Stekel

1868–1940 · Austrian physician & psychoanalyst

Wilhelm Stekel was an Austrian physician and one of Sigmund Freud’s earliest followers, later an independent psychoanalyst known for his work on the psychology of love, sexuality, and the emotions. In his 1921 book The Beloved Ego (and its German counterpart the same year) he set down the antithesis that would later travel the world under other names: that the true opposite of love is not hatred but indifference — the absence of feeling.
