William H. Whyte

William Hollingsworth “Holly” Whyte was an American journalist and organizational analyst who joined Fortune magazine in 1946. Writing about corporate communication, he coined the “illusion of communication” idea in a 1950 article, then became famous for his 1956 bestseller The Organization Man. In later life he turned to studying human behavior in public spaces, producing works such as The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces (1980).
