William Wrigley Jr.

1861–1932 · American chewing-gum manufacturer; founder of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company and majority owner of the Chicago Cubs

William Mills Wrigley Jr. built one of the great American consumer brands almost by accident, discovering that the chewing gum he gave away as a sales premium was more wanted than the soap and baking powder it was meant to promote. He founded the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company in 1891, bought control of the Chicago Cubs by 1921 and had their ballpark named after him in 1926, and bought Santa Catalina Island outright in 1919. He died in Phoenix in January 1932.
