Dixon was the engine room of Chess Records — producer, talent scout, session bassist and staff songwriter — and wrote or co-wrote more than five hundred songs, including “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Little Red Rooster” and “Spoonful.” He produced “Bring It On Home” with Leonard and Phil Chess as well as writing it. He spent much of his later life fighting for credit and royalties on his own catalogue: he sued Chess’s publisher Arc Music in 1977 and founded his own publishing company, and in 1987 settled an out-of-court action against Led Zeppelin covering “Bring It On Home” and “Whole Lotta Love.”
