Xun Kuang (Xunzi)

c. 310 – c. 235 BCE · Chinese Confucian philosopher of the Warring States period

Xun Kuang, known as Xunzi, was a leading Confucian thinker of the late Warring States period. Working in the generation after Mencius, he argued that human nature must be shaped through learning, ritual, and above all practice. His chapter on the Ru ranks mere hearing below seeing, and seeing below doing — the seed of the modern “I hear, I forget” proverb that is wrongly hung on Lao Tzu.
