Why the cover ate the original
A cover eclipses its original most completely when it arrives with a story the original never had. Johnny Cash recorded ‘Hurt’ as a frail old man months from death, and Mark Romanek’s video read the song as an epitaph. Against that, a 1994 industrial-rock album track had little chance of staying the definitive version in the public mind.
The unusual twist is that the original artist agreed. Trent Reznor watched the Cash video and said the song no longer felt like his — so the eclipse was not a theft but a gift, which is exactly why it went unchallenged and why so many listeners now assume the song was Cash’s all along.
