For a whole generation, ‘Mad World’ is the desolate piano ballad from Donnie Darko — and they assume that is the original. It is not. The song was written by Roland Orzabal and first recorded by his band Tears for Fears in 1982, as an up-tempo synth-pop single that reached UK No. 3. Gary Jules and Michael Andrews stripped it down to voice and piano in 2000 for the film, and their version became the 2003 UK Christmas No. 1.
