The sentence spread because it is rhetorically useful: it lets gun-rights advocates diagnose their opponents’ motives while borrowing the authority of the most famous name in psychology. The irony is that its literal meaning — that fearing weapons signals immaturity — is closer to what Freud’s interpreter Kates argued than to anything Freud declared outright.

Freud did write about weapons as dream-symbols for the penis, tied to the anxiety dreams and phobias of neurotic patients. But that clinical observation about symbolism is a long way from a one-line put-down about people who dislike guns.
