Who really said it

A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad

Attributed to Richard Branson
Attribution status: Credited to Branson everywhere, sourced nowhere: the trail ends at a quote anthology and an undated Wikiquote note. Reuse status: Rights unconfirmed

Widely credited to Branson and entirely consistent with a man who built Virgin on stunts rather than ad budgets — but no primary source pins this wording. The line is usually sourced to Virgin Rebel: Richard Branson In His Own Words (2013), which is a compilation of quotations edited by someone else and so cannot show where or when he said it; Wikiquote’s alternative citation, “Mr. Branson’s blog on the Virgin Website,” carries no URL or date and was added by a single editor in 2020.

Unconfirmed quote & credit

“A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad” attributed to Richard Branson. No primary source has been located. The source usually named for it is the 2013 quote compilation "Virgin Rebel: Richard Branson In His Own Words," edited by Danielle McLimore (Agate B2) — an anthology, not something Branson wrote. Wikiquote's alternative citation, "Mr. Branson's blog on the Virgin Website," was added by a single editor in August 2020 and gives no URL or date. Via Quotle.info. · Verbatim: “Publicity is absolutely critical. You have to get your brand out and about, particularly if you're a consumer-oriented brand. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad.”

Publicity is absolutely critical. You have to get your brand out and about, particularly if you’re a consumer-oriented brand. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad. Full circulating form

This three-sentence form is what the quote sites and PR newsletters carry; the famous version is its last sentence alone. Neither form has been traced to a document in Branson’s own hand or a dated interview.

Publisher record for the compilation

How we verified this

  • Wikiquote carries it with a citation that cannot be followed. The Richard Branson page ↗ lists the line and sources it to “Mr. Branson’s blog on the Virgin Website” — no link, no date, and the page has no separate sourced/disputed sections to signal how firm that is.
  • That citation is a single 2020 edit. The revision history shows the line was added on 7 August 2020 by the editor “Startuporg” ↗, whose edit summary calls it “one of the most famous quotes by Richard Branson.” Fame, not provenance.
  • The book everyone names is an anthology. Sources that give a citation at all, such as this PR newsletter ↗, point to Virgin Rebel (2013) — a curated quote collection, so it inherits the sourcing problem rather than solving it.
  • What is documented is older and worded differently. In “How Richard Branson Works Magic” ↗ (strategy+business, 1 October 1998), Branson is quoted directly: “Using yourself to get out and talk about it is a lot cheaper and more effective than a lot of advertising.”

The work in which this wording first appeared has not been identified, so no rights status can honestly be asserted — and nothing here is public domain. If the words are Branson’s they are modern and under copyright as part of whatever interview, post or book they came from; the publication normally named for them, the 2013 compilation Virgin Rebel: Richard Branson In His Own Words, is itself in copyright to its editor and publisher. Quoting a sentence for comment or reporting is a different matter from reproducing the source.

Rights status is our research, not legal advice — and copyright varies by country and edition. For commercial or published use, confirm with the rightsholder. See terms.

Fact-check

The source trail, and where it breaks

Nobody else is ever named as the author of this line — on that, the internet agrees. The problem is the sourcing. Three different “sources” circulate, and none of them is a document showing Branson saying it.

The usual citation“His 2013 book, Virgin Rebel: Richard Branson In His Own WordsNot his book

It is not a book Branson wrote. The publisher’s own record describes it as a compiled collection of quotations, edited by Danielle McLimore for Agate B2 ↗ and reissued in 2020 as Richard Branson: In His Own Words. An anthology records that a quote is in circulation; it cannot establish when or where it was first said.

The Wikiquote citation“From Mr. Branson’s blog on the Virgin Website” No URL, no date

That note has no link and no date. The page history shows it was added on 7 August 2020 ↗ by a single editor, with the summary “adding one of the most famous quotes by Richard Branson” — which is a reason to include a quote, not evidence of where it came from.

The wording itselfThe one-sentence version everyone shares A trim, not the full quote

The fuller form carried by aggregators runs: “Publicity is absolutely critical. You have to get your brand out and about, particularly if you’re a consumer-oriented brand. A good PR story is infinitely more effective than a front page ad.” One newsletter reproduces all three sentences ↗ while crediting the 2013 anthology. The famous version is the tail end of a longer answer.

The quote-aggregator layerAZQuotes, Quotefancy and the rest Citation-free

The AZQuotes entry ↗ gives the quote and the name and nothing else — no book, no interview, no date. These pages are where most of the sharing starts, and they add no provenance at all.

Branson almost certainly believes it; he may well have said it. But the closest thing to a documented version is much older and worded differently — in Glenn Rifkin’s strategy+business profile of 1 October 1998 ↗, Branson is quoted saying that using yourself to get out and talk about your business is “a lot cheaper and more effective than a lot of advertising.”

Context

Why this one is so quotable — and so hard to source

It is the quote the public relations industry would have invented if Branson hadn’t: the most famous self-publicist in business, apparently confirming that earned coverage beats paid space. It appears on agency websites, in pitch decks and on conference slides, almost always trimmed to the punchy second half and almost never with a date attached.

That trimming is part of why it floats free. The fuller version that aggregators carry runs to three sentences — publicity is critical, get the brand out and about, a PR story beats a front page ad — and reads like an answer given in conversation rather than a line composed for print. Somewhere behind it there may well be an interview. Nobody circulating the quote has ever said which one.

The sentiment is unmistakably Branson’s. The paper trail is not.

What Branson is documented as saying about publicity

He said something with the same argument in it, on the record, a long time ago. In “How Richard Branson Works Magic” ↗, Glenn Rifkin’s profile for strategy+business published 1 October 1998, Branson is quoted directly: “Using yourself to get out and talk about it is a lot cheaper and more effective than a lot of advertising. In fact, if you do it correctly, it can beat advertising hands down and save tens of millions of dollars.”

That is the documented version of the thought — same claim, different words, with a named writer, a named publication and a date. It is worth noting the contrast: the sourced Branson line is about using yourself; the famous unsourced line is about a PR story. They are close, but one of them can be checked.

About Richard Branson

Richard Branson

born 1950 · British entrepreneur · founder of the Virgin Group

Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born in Blackheath, London, on 18 July 1950, founded Virgin Records in 1972 and Virgin Atlantic in 1984, and was knighted in 2000. He built the Virgin brand less on advertising spend than on being the story — transatlantic powerboat records, round-the-world balloon attempts, and a habit of turning up wherever a camera was pointed. The sentiment in this quote is unmistakably his; what is missing is a document showing him putting it in these words.
