This is a floating classical proverb, not a Napoleon original. Plutarch’s ‘Moralia’ credits the Athenian general Chabrias with the idea that an army of deer led by a lion is more to be feared than an army of lions led by a deer. Per Quote Investigator ↗, Napoleon did employ the saying (recorded in an 1823 St Helena memoir) but he explicitly credited “the Athenian general,” and the ‘sheep’ wording seen today first surfaced in 1736 with no connection to him.

This is one of history’s most-travelled proverbs, pinned in turn on nearly every famous commander. The through-line is that almost no one who gets the credit actually originated it.

Napoleon Bonaparte Misattributed

Napoleon ↗ did use the saying — the 1823 St Helena memoir records him invoking it — but he credited “the Athenian general,” not himself, and used ‘deer,’ not ‘sheep.’ Wikiquote ↗ files the sheep version under “Misattributed.”

Alexander the Great Unsupported

Widely shared as Alexander’s (“I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep…”), but Wikiquote ↗ lists it only as an ancient proverb loosely attributed to Alexander among many commanders, with no primary source placing it in his mouth.

Why it mattered

The saying flatters a comforting idea about leadership: that a bold leader multiplies the courage of ordinary followers, while a timid leader squanders even the fiercest. That universality is exactly why it has been reassigned across two millennia to whichever great commander a writer had in mind.

Its migration is also a case study in how wording drifts. Plutarch’s Chabrias spoke of deer; by 1736 the animal had become sheep; the 19th century preferred donkeys. Napoleon, who genuinely used the maxim, was careful to credit “the Athenian general” — a modesty the internet has quietly erased.
