This was never Astaire’s line: it is a studio reader’s verdict on him, scrawled on the report card after an early-1930s screen test, and the writer has never been reliably identified. Quote Investigator ↗ traces the familiar three-part wording to Fortune magazine of August 1939, which credits it only to “some hapless underling”; the earliest printing it found, an Associated Press column of 16 June 1937, is shorter still, and Astaire’s own version differed again.
