Who really said it
Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation
Lorde wrote this in A Burst of Light (Firebrand Books, 1988), in the book’s epilogue, written as she lived with breast cancer that had spread to her liver. The words are hers verbatim — but the sentence does not stop where the internet stops it. In full: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Wikiquote carries the line with a full citation to p. 125, in the journal “A Burst of Light: Living with Cancer.”
