Who really said it
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for
Obama really did say this, in his election-night remarks in Chicago on 5 February 2008 — the transcript is archived at the American Presidency Project. Two caveats: the transcript reads “or if we wait for some other time,” and the memorable half of the line — “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for” — is the poet June Jordan’s, written in 1978.
