No Voltaire text containing this has ever been produced, in French or English. The decisive detail is linguistic: the French version in circulation does not read like eighteenth-century French and appears to be a back-translation from the English — the reverse of what you would find if a French philosopher had written it. It is an anonymous twentieth-century medical joke that acquired a famous name.
