Every artist was first an amateur. The ear outgrows the tongue, is sooner ripe and perfect; but the tongue is always learning to say what the ear has taught it, and the hand obeys the same lesson.

An inserted ‘at’ circulates widely — e.g. this popular write-up — but Emerson’s text reads ‘was first an amateur.’

The sentence is almost always shown alone, cut off from the surrounding remark that ‘the ear outgrows the tongue’ — turning an observation about how skill matures into a bare pep-slogan.
