Act III, p. 166 — the famous line is the clause in the middle
The words are Edward’s, but the thought is Reilly’s: Edward is reporting the psychiatrist — “But Sir Henry has been saying, / I think, that every moment is a fresh beginning” — as he works out what he has understood. A page earlier (p. 165) Reilly himself tells Lavinia, “Only by acceptance / Of the past will you alter its meaning.” That is why some summaries credit the line to the psychiatrist rather than to Edward.
