Widely credited to Mead, and consistent with the argument she spent a career making — that the temperaments cultures assign to men and women are learned rather than given. But the earliest appearance anyone has located is a third party quoting her in a 1967 members’ newsletter, and no book, essay, column, letter or transcript of Mead’s own has been found containing the sentence.
