How we verified this

  • Read the raw wikitext of Wikiquote’s Anne Frank page ↗: the line sits in the Disputed section rather than among the sourced diary entries, and the single citation attached to it is the 1990 Bryson book.
  • Confirmed that book exists as cited — the Internet Archive catalogues O. J. Bryson, Networking the Kingdom, 1990 ↗. Its scanned text is lending-restricted, so p. 187 was not read here; the page number is Wikiquote’s, not ours.
  • Checked the page’s talk archive ↗, where a contributor reports an earlier attribution — The Healing Touch of Affirmation (1976) by Thomas A. Kane, p. 91. We could not confirm it: the Internet Archive holds the 1976 book ↗, but its text is lending-restricted too. We record the claim without adopting it, which is why nothing on this page calls 1990 the earliest appearance of the words — only the earliest Wikiquote cites.
  • Searched Quote Investigator ↗: it carries no article on Anne Frank, so there is no specialist ruling to defer to beyond Wikiquote’s.

No public-domain or copyright status is asserted, because there is no identified source to attach one to. Anne Frank’s own diary — first published in Dutch in 1947 — is a separate question, and it is not the source of this line.

Rights status is our research, not legal advice — and copyright varies by country and edition. For commercial or published use, confirm with the rightsholder. See terms.

Fact-check

Often misattributed

The line circulates almost exclusively under Anne Frank’s name, on quotation sites, posters and motivational slides. Two things are worth separating: who is credited, and where the words actually first appear.

The popular creditAnne Frank No primary source

Nothing in her diary or Tales from the Secret Annex matches it. Wikiquote ↗ places it under Disputed — its category for attributions that no source supports — rather than among the entries it can cite by date.

Where the words surfaceNetworking the Kingdom (1990), p. 187 earliest known appearance

Wikiquote calls O. J. Bryson’s church-growth handbook “the earliest source yet found for this attribution.” The Internet Archive catalogue record ↗ confirms the book, author and year; its text is lending-restricted, so we did not read the page itself.

The honest answer is that nobody knows who wrote it. It reads like mid-century American self-help, and the earliest citation anyone has produced ↗ is a 1990 book that was already crediting Anne Frank.

Context

Why it matters

Anne Frank died at fifteen, having written one of the most-read books of the twentieth century. That combination — enormous name recognition, a voice associated with hope in the worst circumstances imaginable — makes her one of the internet’s strongest magnets for uplifting lines nobody can source.

The cost is not just tidiness. Attaching invented optimism to a Holocaust victim quietly rewrites what she actually wrote, which is far more specific, more frightened and more interesting than the posters suggest.

Her real diary is stranger and sharper than the quotations pinned to her name.

Wikiquote’s Anne Frank page keeps two kinds of entry apart: quotations it can pin to a dated diary entry or a published story, and a short Disputed list for lines it cannot. This sentence is in the second list, alongside “Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness” — both cited only to late-twentieth-century self-help books ↗.

The talk page shows the ordinary mechanics of that research: a contributor turns up a 1976 book that credits her, earlier than the 1990 source the article names ↗, and the article has not yet been updated to reflect it. We have left our own page hedged for the same reason — the 1976 volume is on the Internet Archive but not readable, so the claim stands unverified either way.

The author

About Anne Frank

Anne Frank

1929–1945 · German-born diarist who hid in Amsterdam

Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt on 12 June 1929 and died at Bergen–Belsen in February or March 1945, aged fifteen. She kept a diary through the two years her family hid in an Amsterdam annexe; her father Otto published it in Dutch in 1947 as Het Achterhuis, and the English translation followed in 1952 as The Diary of a Young Girl. That reach is exactly why unsourced uplift gets pinned to her name — a line in her voice travels further than an anonymous one.
