Who really said it
Football is not a matter of life and death. It's much more important than that
The thought is his and it was said on camera, but not as the polished epigram people share. In a Granada Television interview with Shelley Rohde broadcast on 20 May 1981, Shankly said: “Somebody said that football’s a matter of life and death to you. I said, ‘Listen, it’s more important than that.’” — he was quoting someone else’s remark back at them, and he said it moments after admitting he regretted what football had cost his family. Wikipedia notes the quotation is frequently paraphrased ↗, and the familiar one-liner is one of those paraphrases.
