The line ‘audentis Fortuna iuvat’ ↗ is genuinely Virgil’s — Aeneid Book 10, line 284, shouted by the Rutulian prince Turnus as he rallies his men against the landing Trojans — and the “bold/daring” wording tracks Virgil’s audentis specifically. But Virgil did not coin the thought: it was already a stock Roman proverb (used earlier by Ennius and Terence, and called an ‘old proverb’ by Cicero ↗), and the English saying stands on its own, attested centuries before any English Aeneid.

Turnus, seeing the Trojans come ashore, spurs his warriors on: “audentis Fortuna iuvat” — “Fortune favours the daring.” The irony is that Turnus is the poem’s antagonist, and Fortune does not save him: he is killed by Aeneas in the final lines.

The attribution to Virgil is not wrong — the line really is in the Aeneid — but two things are usually lost: Virgil didn’t originate the idea, and the popular English phrase is a proverb in its own right, not a quotation lifted from Virgil.

An old English proverb, not a line quoted from Virgil floats free

It is attested in English in Chaucer’s Troilus & Criseyde (c. 1385) and Gower’s Confessio Amantis (c. 1390) ↗ — centuries before any English translation of the Aeneid — so the saying you know is not a rendering of Virgil so much as a parallel proverb.

Two Latin lines, two English sayings which one?

‘Fortune favours the bold’ matches Virgil’s audentis (daring), while ‘fortune favours the brave’ matches Terence’s fortes (strong/brave) ↗ — which is why the two English versions are both ‘right’ but point at different ancient sources.

Bottom line: Virgil really wrote ‘audentis Fortuna iuvat’ at Aeneid 10.284 ↗, and it is a fair source for “Fortune favours the bold” — but he was quoting a proverb that was old even in his day, and the English saying has its own independent life.

Context

Why it stuck

Part of the phrase’s appeal is dramatic irony. In the Aeneid it is not the hero who says it but Turnus, Aeneas’s doomed rival, urging his men into a battle he will ultimately lose — Fortune, in the poem, does not in fact favour him. Virgil is deliberately putting a confident battlefield proverb into the mouth of the man about to be destroyed.

Detached from that context, the saying became one of the most durable mottoes in the Western world — adopted by military units, universities, and clubs, and endlessly requoted as plain encouragement to take risks. The version that circulates is the proverb, not the tragic scene.

Publius Vergilius Maro (70–19 BC) was ancient Rome’s foremost poet, author of the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the national epic the Aeneid. The Aeneid, composed over the last decade of his life and left unfinished at his death, follows the Trojan hero Aeneas to Italy and became the central text of the Latin canon. Virgil frequently wove existing Roman proverbs and religious formulae into his verse — as here, where he gives an old saying about Fortune to the doomed warrior Turnus.
