The attribution to Edison is genuine — but the exact wording and its precision are frequently overstated. Two honest wrinkles are worth flagging.

Thomas Edison evolved wording

Edison did not settle on “1 % / 99 %” from the start. His earliest documented version (Ladies’ Home Journal, April 1898) was “Two per cent… genius and ninety-eight per cent… hard work.” The famous 1 %/99 % form is a later refinement, in print by 1901.

Various earlier writers precursors

The sentiment predates Edison. Lecturer Kate Sanborn framed genius as “perspiration more than inspiration” in the early 1890s, and Thomas Carlyle’s “genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains” circulated earlier still. Edison sharpened the thought into its memorable percentage form.

Verdict: genuinely Edison — he coined the fractional maxim and affirmed the exact wording himself — but the polished “1 % / 99 %” version evolved from his earlier “2 % / 98 %” phrasing.

Why it stuck

The maxim endures because it captures Edison’s entire working method in a single line. He built the first industrial research laboratory on the premise that invention was systematic grind, not lightning-strike genius — and he returned to the “inspiration and perspiration” formula repeatedly across a public career spanning the phonograph, the light bulb, and hundreds of other patents.

That it comes from Edison’s own mouth, in his own letters and interviews, is what sets it apart from the thousands of feel-good lines falsely pinned to famous names. The only honest caveat is the arithmetic: the ratio drifted from 2 %/98 % to the crisper 1 %/99 % that everyone now quotes.
