This is one of the rare famous quotes that holds up. Edison repeated the maxim across interviews for decades, affirmed the exact wording in a 1927 letter (“it is quite true I once made the statement… and I am still of the same opinion”), and was quoted saying it verbatim in M. A. Rosanoff’s September 1932 Harper’s Monthly profile. The one nuance: the polished “1 % / 99 %” form evolved from an earlier “2 % genius, 98 % hard work” version he gave in 1898.
