God created war so that Americans would learn geography
There is no Twain source and no Bierce source. The oldest instance researchers have located is a 1987 Los Angeles Times piece quoting the Mexican-American comedian Paul Rodriguez: ‘War is God’s way of teaching us geography.’ That is 77 years after Twain died. Rodriguez may well have coined it; he may equally have picked it up on the circuit, which is where jokes live before anyone writes them down. What is certain is that the wording you see here — longer, tidier, moralised into ‘so that Americans would learn’ — is a later polish of that punchline, not a Victorian aphorism.
