There is no record of Washington ever saying or writing this. The phrasing first appears in print in 1902 — more than a century after his death — and researchers, including the editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, have found it in none of Washington’s writings ↗. Washington’s own estate at Mount Vernon lists it among its “spurious quotations.”
