Who really said it
I believe in a benevolent dictatorship - as long as I am the benevolent dictator
The joke really is Branson’s, and printed quotation dictionaries date it to a remark reported on 25 November 1984 — but every dated source prints it tighter: “I believe in benevolent dictatorship provided I am the dictator.” No 1984 newspaper, interview or broadcast text has been located, and the “as long as I am the benevolent dictator” phrasing appears in none of the reference works that record the line.
