Who really said it
I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream
This line did not come from van Gogh at all. It is a lightly reworded English rendering of the painter Camille Corot’s remark — French: “Je rêve mon tableau, et plus tard je peindrai mon rêve” — documented in English print by 1908–1918. The Corot original reads “I dream my picture and afterwards I paint my dream.” The van Gogh version is unsourced and appears only from the 1990s onward; it is not found anywhere in van Gogh’s letters.
