Who really said it
I love those who can smile in trouble
The line is a reworded excerpt from Thomas Paine’s “The American Crisis,” No. I, published December 1776. Paine actually wrote “I love the man that can smile in trouble” — the internet softened it to “those who” and re-credited it to Leonardo da Vinci, who never wrote it.
