Who really said it
Ich bin ein Berliner
Kennedy said it, twice, from the steps of the Rathaus Schöneberg in West Berlin on 26 June 1963, to a crowd estimated at 120,000. The quotation is not in doubt; the joke about it is. He did not accidentally call himself a jelly doughnut, the German is grammatically correct, and no German in that square laughed at him. The one burst of laughter on the recording comes moments later, when Kennedy makes a crack at his own interpreter’s expense.
