Who really said it

If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven't done anything today

Attributed to Lou Holtz
Attribution status: Attributed Reuse status: In copyright

Credited to Holtz, and it sounds like him. But the sentence is a floating aphorism, not a documented remark. Wikiquote ↗ lists the Holtz version under Attributed with no real citation, while its Mikhail Gorbachev page ↗ carries the near-identical “If what you have done yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today” in its sourced section. Even that citation is a 2004 business-advice anthology, not Gorbachev. Two names, one saying, and no primary source behind either.

In context

Evoking the world of Lou Holtz — American college football coach · Notre Dame, 1986–1996. Theme: "If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven't done anything today". Atmospheric and restrained, cinematic directional light, a muted period-appropriate palette, fine grain and texture. Compose with generous empty space for the quote and a small credit line. No lettering in the image itself.

Minimalist

Minimalist editorial slide for the quote "If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven't done anything today". Clean background, a single muted accent color, generous negative space, subtle paper or linen texture, no literal illustration — let the words carry it. Reserve clear space for a serif quote and a small credit line. No lettering in the image itself.

If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven’t done anything today.

The Holtz wording, as Wikiquote ↗ records it. The Gorbachev wording differs in three places — have done, still looks big, much — which is the ordinary drift of a saying that travels by retelling rather than by text.

Wikiquote: Lou Holtz (Attributed)

How we verified this

  • Wikiquote ↗ files this line under Attributed, which is its own signal: the page has no sourced section at all, and every quotation on it carries the same kind of second-hand citation.
  • That citation is a Bleacher Report listicle, “Top 15 Funniest Lou Holtz Quotes” by Ben Weiximann. We could not retrieve it — the host is unreachable from our network — so we can neither confirm what it says nor what it cites. We are not counting it as corroboration.
  • A search across all of Wikiquote for the phrase “still looks big to you” returns exactly one page: Mikhail Gorbachev ↗. There it sits in the sourced section, cited to 101 Best Ways to Get Ahead: Solid Gold Advice from 101 of the World’s Most Successful People (2004) by Michael E. Angier and Sarah Pond, p. 30.
  • That does not make it Gorbachev’s either. A 2004 compilation of motivational advice is a place a saying lands, not a place it starts — so what the rival citation really shows is that the line was already circulating unattached, ready to be assigned to whichever successful person a compiler had in mind.
  • Holtz’s own books would be the obvious place to look. The Internet Archive holds Winning Every Day (1998) ↗ and Wins, Losses, and Lessons (2006) ↗, but both are lending-restricted and cannot be searched full-text, so this line is neither confirmed nor ruled out there.
  • Quote Investigator has not examined this quotation, so there is no specialist finding to defer to.

Fact-check

Who else gets credited

Wikiquote assigns this saying to two different men on two different pages, in two slightly different wordings. That pattern — same thought, drifting words, interchangeable famous names — is the signature of an aphorism with no author.

Wikiquote, sourced sectionMikhail Gorbachev Rival attribution

Credited with “If what you have done yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today”, cited to 101 Best Ways to Get Ahead (2004), p. 30 — on his Wikiquote page ↗. A 2004 anthology, not a Gorbachev text.

Wikiquote, attributed sectionLou Holtz Not refuted

Credited with the wording on this page, with no citation beyond a listicle — on his Wikiquote page ↗. Nothing contradicts it; nothing supports it either.

Neither attribution rests on a primary source. We leave this page with Lou Holtz, because that is where the weight of usage sits and nothing disproves it — but the honest answer is that nobody has shown who said it first.

Context

The shape of a homeless aphorism

Motivational sayings travel badly. They get retold, tightened, and re-credited to whoever the retelling needs — a coach for a locker room, a statesman for a boardroom. By the time anyone asks for a source, there are two names and no document.

That is what has happened here. The thought is a good one and plainly older than either man it is pinned on.

A coach for the locker room, a statesman for the boardroom — same sentence, different audience.

The author

About Lou Holtz

Lou Holtz

1937–2026 · American college football coach · Notre Dame, 1986–1996

Lou Holtz (6 January 1937 – 4 March 2026) coached at six colleges and one NFL team across nearly three decades, most famously taking Notre Dame to an undefeated 1988 season and the national title. He finished with 249 college wins, spent a decade as an ESPN analyst after retiring from the sideline, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020. He was as well known for the one-liners as for the coaching — which is exactly why lines attached to his name need checking.
