If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog
Truman almost certainly never said this. The first known link between Truman and the saying is a line Samuel Gallu wrote for a fictional Truman in his one-man show Give ’em Hell, Harry! (Viking Press, 1975), p. 8 — and even there the wording is “You want a friend in life, get a dog!”, not “in Washington.” The underlying joke is older still and anonymous: it ran as a Philadelphia Inquirer classified ad in 1911 ↗.
