What actually gets misattributed

The quote is real and really is in Seneca — the confusion is about whose words they are and which English form is canonical.

Actually Hecato of Rhodes quoting, not coining

In Letter 9 Seneca writes ‘Hecaton ait … si vis amari, ama’ — he explicitly names the earlier Stoic Hecato as the author and is passing the maxim along, not claiming it. Crediting only ‘Seneca’ drops the person Seneca was quoting. See Wikisource ↗.

‘If you would be loved, love’ (Gummere) translation variant

The viral five-word form “if you wish to be loved, love” is a faithful literal translation of ‘si vis amari, ama,’ but it is not word-for-word any single canonical English edition; Gummere’s Loeb reads ‘if you would be loved, love.’

The maxim is genuine and genuinely sits in Seneca’s Letter 9 — but the words are Hecato’s, which Seneca himself makes clear — see the Latin text ↗.

Context

Why it was written

Letter 9 of the Moral Letters answers a challenge from Lucilius about whether the wise man needs friends. Seneca argues that the Stoic seeks friendship not for insurance against misfortune but for its own sake — to have someone to whom he can give love and loyalty.

To clinch the point he reaches for a line from Hecato of Rhodes: the only reliable ‘love-charm’ is to love first. It is offered as borrowed wisdom, which is exactly why the modern habit of stamping it ‘— Seneca’ is only half right.

Who was Hecato?

Hecato of Rhodes was a Stoic philosopher of the late 2nd / early 1st century BC and a pupil of Panaetius. His writings survive only in fragments and quotations — chiefly through Cicero and Seneca — which is why the maxim reaches us under Seneca’s name rather than his own.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca was a Roman Stoic philosopher, tragedian and statesman who served as tutor and adviser to the emperor Nero. His Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium (Moral Letters to Lucilius) — 124 letters on how to live well — is his most enduring work, and the reason so many Stoic one-liners survive. In Letter 9, on friendship, he preserves this maxim by explicitly crediting it to the earlier Stoic Hecato of Rhodes, not to himself.
