The saying trades on a stock-market pun: a “bear” bets a price will fall, and to be a “grizzly” is to bet aggressively. That origin fits a 1908 Wall-Street story far better than the writings of a man who preached nonviolence.

The mismatch is exactly what makes the misattribution spread: pinning a swaggering, take-no-prisoners line on Gandhi feels surprising enough to be shareable, and few people stop to check whether he actually said it.

A committed pacifist, his voluminous Collected Works run to roughly 100 volumes, none of which contain this bellicose one-liner. The saying’s aggressive, predator-take-all sentiment runs directly against his philosophy, which is part of why the misattribution is so conspicuous.
