Genuine, and italicised by James himself. The sentence closes his practical maxims on habit in The Principles of Psychology, vol. I (New York: Henry Holt, 1890), ch. IV, “Habit,” pp. 126–27 — and it had already appeared, word for word, in his article “The Laws of Habit” in Popular Science Monthly for February 1887, p. 450.
