A misquote in two directions

This is one of English’s most famous misquotations. The attribution to Congreve is correct — but almost nobody quotes him accurately.

“the savage beast” Misquote

Congreve wrote “a savage Breast” — the heart, the seat of feeling — not a wild animal. The 1697 text reads “Breast.” ‘Beast’ is a mishearing repeated for three centuries, helped along by the near-identical sound.

“Music soothes…” Paraphrase

Congreve’s line is “Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast” — not the compressed “Music soothes.” The short form is a modern paraphrase, per Phrases.org.uk.

“Shakespeare” Wrongly credited

The line is sometimes pinned on Shakespeare because it sounds Elizabethan. It is not his — it is Congreve’s, written nearly a century after Shakespeare’s day.

The author is right and the idea is real — but the accurate quotation is “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast,” from Congreve’s The Mourning Bride (1697).

Context

Why ‘beast’ stuck

The mix-up isn’t purely careless. “Breast” and “beast” differ by a single transposed vowel and sound almost identical aloud — and the ‘beast’ reading paints a vivid picture (a snarling animal calmed by a melody) that the abstract ‘breast’ doesn’t.

There’s even a classical pedigree behind the error: the taming-wild-beasts-with-music image runs through the Orpheus myth and Thomas May’s English translation of Lucan’s Pharsalia, which Congreve, a classical scholar, knew. So ‘beast’ echoes a real literary tradition — it just isn’t what Congreve actually wrote.

He wrote ‘breast’ — the heart. ‘Beast’ is three centuries of mishearing.
