Who really said it
Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty
Chanel really did publish a maxim of this kind: Quote Investigator ↗ documents it in a set of “Maximes et Sentences” credited to Gabrielle Chanel in the Paris Vogue of September 1938. But the French there has three limbs — twenty, thirty, fifty — and the two-part English line that circulates today drops the middle one. No published translation has been traced that carries this exact shortened wording, so the sentiment is Chanel’s while the sentence is a later condensation.
