Who really said it
Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane
King really did say this, on 25 March 1966, to reporters in Chicago before he addressed the second convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. The wording that circulates today is not the wording anyone recorded: the Associated Press account published the next day reads “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death” — health, not health care; inhuman, not inhumane; and with a final clause the famous version drops. No transcript or recording of the speech itself has ever been located.
