In the novel the maxim belongs to Serlo, whom the narrator describes as advocating daily exposure to beauty so the senses do not grow ‘dead to impressions’. The popular quote trims Carlyle’s ‘For this reason, he would add’ framing and often the closing clause.

The attribution to Goethe is correct — but two things about it are routinely misunderstood:

A fictional character, not Goethe speaking directly context

In the novel the maxim is spoken by Serlo, a theatre director, as reported by the narrator (‘For this reason, he would add…’). It is genuinely Goethe’s writing, but it is a character’s line in a work of fiction rather than a personal creed — a nuance nearly every quote card drops. See Carlyle’s text.

Many circulating versions are looser paraphrases variant

Beyond Carlyle’s ‘hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture’ you’ll find forms like ‘Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture…’ — different English renderings of the same German sentence, not separate Goethe quotes.

Bottom line: really Goethe, from Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship — but originally a line for the character Serlo, and the popular English text is Carlyle’s 1824 translation.

Context

Why it resonates

The sentence has become a self-care motto pinned to walls and calendars: a small daily ration of beauty — music, poetry, a picture, a few sensible words — as a guard against dullness. In the novel it carries a slightly sharper edge: Serlo makes the point precisely because he thinks most people let their senses go ‘dead to impressions’ of the excellent.

That the line survives detached from its speaker and its book is typical of Goethe, whose fiction and letters have been quarried for aphorisms for two centuries.
