Angelou really did say these words — on camera, in the episode “A Portrait of Maya Angelou” of Bill Moyers’ PBS series Creativity, broadcast 8 January 1982 — but she said them as a quotation of Mrs. Bertha Flowers, the Stamps, Arkansas woman who coaxed her out of years of silence.
