Who really said it

Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it's not satire, it's bullying

Not Terry Pratchett — a Tumblr user’s paraphrase vrabia (Tumblr user)
Attribution status: Disputed Reuse status: Rights unconfirmed

The earliest match Quote Investigator ↗ found is a set of tags the Tumblr user vrabia added to a reblogged post on 27 January 2016. Vrabia was summarizing in their own words something they remembered Pratchett saying. They later said plainly that Pratchett “did not say this word for word,” and QI concludes the line “should not be credited to Pratchett.”

This is vrabia’s tag note as Quote Investigator transcribes it ↗. The note presents the idea as something Pratchett “said” but does not claim to quote him. The polished two-sentence version, with “If you are laughing,” turns up later in a 7 March 2016 tweet that credits Pratchett directly.

How a Tumblr tag became a “Pratchett quote”

  • 27 January 2016: Tumblr user vrabia reblogs a post about satire and adds tags that recall “that thing terry pratchett said” about satire ridiculing power. This is the earliest match known to Quote Investigator ↗.
  • February–March 2016: Writer J. M. Frey shares the thread on 2 February 2016. A 7 March 2016 tweet then gives the line as a direct quotation, signed “-Terry Pratchett” (QI ↗).
  • 20 October 2016 and 16 November 2018: Vrabia disowns the attribution: “this is not an actual quote out of terry pratchett’s mouth, pen or keyboard.” Their words are transcribed by Quote Investigator ↗.
  • February 2019: A Wikiquote talk-page thread, “Unsourced quote about satire,” asks for a source. It later records vrabia’s explanation as the origin (Wikiquote talk ↗).

The wording does not come from any work by Terry Pratchett, so his estate and publishers hold no rights in it. It first appeared as informal hashtags in a pseudonymous Tumblr note in 2016, and quotle.info asserts no copyright status for a short phrase like that.

Fact-check

Who gets the credit, and why

Within weeks of a Tumblr user’s offhand comment, this line was being shared as a word-for-word Terry Pratchett quotation. It has been credited to him ever since.

The popular attributionTerry Pratchett Misattributed

Quote Investigator ↗ found no substantive evidence that Pratchett made this statement. The line is not among his quotations on Wikiquote ↗. Pratchett died on 12 March 2015 (Wikipedia ↗), so every known appearance of the wording postdates his death.

An early sharerJ. M. Frey Spread it, didn’t write it

Frey reblogged vrabia’s thread on 2 February 2016 and tweeted that it said to “Always remember that thing terry pratchett said about how satire is meant to ridicule power.” QI names Frey as a candidate but shows the words were vrabia’s (QI ↗).

The charitable readingA paraphrase of something Pratchett wrote Unlocated

Vrabia believed they were paraphrasing an interview, a non-fiction piece or a Discworld scene, but said they “can’t source” it. No such passage has been identified (QI ↗). A 2018 blog post noted that people who investigated the viral tweet “could find no evidence that Pratchett had ever said it” (Louder Yay ↗).

The exact words belong to the Tumblr user vrabia (27 January 2016), who later called them “me paraphrasing him in the tags of a tumblr post.” Quote Investigator concludes that the expression “should not be credited to Pratchett” (Quote Investigator ↗).

Context

Why it stuck to Pratchett

Pratchett was a celebrated humorist and satirist, and the Discworld novels routinely mock the powerful. A crisp rule that satire should “punch up” sounds like him, which is exactly why a stranger’s summary of his views became a “quote.” Vrabia’s tags said “that thing terry pratchett said,” and later readers dropped the hedging, tidied the grammar and added quotation marks.

This case is unusually clear because the person who wrote the words spoke up. Vrabia explained twice on Tumblr, in October 2016 and November 2018, that the line was their own paraphrase. Quote Investigator documented the whole chain in August 2024.
