The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is obvious that man is himself a traveler; that the purpose of this world is not ‘to have and to hold’ but ‘to give and serve.’ There can be no other meaning.

Why this one keeps getting reassigned
Aphorisms about service and duty are magnets for reattribution: the more admired the speaker, the more ‘quotable’ the line feels, so it migrates toward the most beloved name available. Muhammad Ali — a boxer turned humanitarian synonymous with generosity — is an ideal host for a saying about paying ‘rent’ through service.
The irony is that Ali’s sincerity here is real. He did use the line, and his foundation still does. What is false is the implicit claim on posters that he minted it. The maxim was already circulating anonymously before he was born.
Ali really said it — he just didn’t invent it.
