Per Quote Investigator, the earliest known version appeared in the Boston Record and was reprinted in newspapers in February 1905 — an old Maine fisherman’s reply, “Oh, sometimes I sit and think, and then again I just sit.” It was popularized by a 1906 Punch cartoon and only attached to Milne around 2006. It appears in none of his books.

A bond salesman, just back from Maine, told of asking an old fisherman what he did with himself evenings. “Oh,” said the fisherman, “sometimes I sit and think, and then again I just sit.”

Reconstructed from the 1905 Boston Record anecdote as reprinted in U.S. newspapers; the modern polished form — “sometimes I sit and think, and sometimes I just sit” — is a later smoothing of this joke.

  • 1915: L. M. Montgomery folds a dialect variant into Anne of the Island — “Part of the time I sits and thinks and the rest I jest sits” — showing it was already common folk currency (Quote Investigator).
  • c. 2006 onward: the line is retro-fitted onto A. A. Milne and Winnie-the-Pooh (and, separately, onto Satchel Paige), though it appears in none of Milne’s books and is absent from his Wikiquote page.

How Pooh got the credit

A feel-good one-liner with no owner is exactly the kind of quote that drifts toward famous, gentle names. This one landed on A. A. Milne — but it predates Winnie-the-Pooh by two decades.

The line appears in none of Milne’s books and is absent from his Wikiquote page; the attribution only emerges around 2006, per Quote Investigator. The saying was already in print in 1905, when Milne was 23 and Pooh was two decades away.

Satchel Paige Later graft

The baseball pitcher gets credit in some collections (around 2009), but the wording long predates him — another famous name attached to an already-old saying, per Quote Investigator.

Woodrow Wilson / ‘Punch’ as originator Popularizer, not source

Punch (1906) and a September 1911 Woodrow Wilson political usage (“a conservative man is a man who just sits and thinks, mostly sits”) helped circulate the line, but they repeat an existing joke rather than coin it, per Quote Investigator; the Boston Record version predates them (Barry Popik).

The real author is anonymous: an old Maine fisherman’s deadpan reply, first printed in the Boston Record in February 1905, per Quote Investigator.

Context

Why it sticks to Pooh

The saying works because it flatters idleness as a kind of wisdom — which is precisely the register of Winnie-the-Pooh, a bear “of very little brain” who is content to do nothing in particular. That tonal match is why the internet finds Milne a plausible home for it, even though the words are a New England fisherman’s joke from 1905.
