Who really said it
Sometimes I sit and think, and sometimes I just sit
The line is not from A. A. Milne or Winnie-the-Pooh. Per Quote Investigator, the earliest known version appeared in the Boston Record and was reprinted in newspapers in February 1905 — an old Maine fisherman’s reply, “Oh, sometimes I sit and think, and then again I just sit.” It was popularized by a 1906 Punch cartoon and only attached to Milne around 2006. It appears in none of his books.
