The next big moment will be life becoming multiplanetary, an unprecedented adventure that would dramatically enhance the richness and diversity of our collective consciousness. It would also serve as a hedge against the myriad--and growing--threats to our survival. An asteroid or a supervolcano could certainly destroy us, but we also face risks the dinosaurs never saw: An engineered virus, nuclear war, inadvertent creation of a micro black hole, or some as-yet-unknown technology could spell the end of us. Sooner or later, we must expand life beyond our little blue mud ball--or go extinct. Musk, Esquire, 2008

Copied from the archived Esquire page, which prints the dash as a double hyphen (“--”). The next paragraph begins “What stands in the way? The ridiculously recalcitrant problem of big, reusable, reliable rockets.”

Punctuation“…mud ball or go extinct” Minor

The popular form leaves out the dash before “or go extinct.” The archived Esquire page prints “mud ball--or go extinct” (archived page ↗).

The genuine wording is Musk’s own: “Sooner or later, we must expand life beyond our little blue mud ball—or go extinct,” from his Esquire essay dated 1 October 2008 (Quote Investigator ↗).

Context

Why he wrote it

Musk wrote the essay for Esquire’s 2008 “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century” feature. It opens by calling the news of the day (the Iraq war, the presidential election and the debt crisis) little more than a footnote. Then it lists the few “genuinely important events” in the history of life on Earth and names life becoming multiplanetary as the next one.

The “blue mud ball” sentence ends his list of threats: asteroids, supervolcanoes, engineered viruses, nuclear war and unknown technologies. It leads into his main point. The obstacle is “big, reusable, reliable rockets,” and the cost of human spaceflight must fall “by a factor of 100.” He then writes, “That’s why I started SpaceX.”

That's why I started SpaceX.

What the essay predicted

In the same essay Musk writes that recovering and reflying the Falcon 9 would make it “the first fully reusable orbital rocket.” He adds that if launch prices fell enough, “life will become sustainably multiplanetary in less than a century.”
